      3. The PROTEEN® Formula Explained

      What is PROTEEN®?

      Intense bouts of exercise like gymnastics, combat sports, tennis, football, swimming and many more places a huge amount of stress on the developing athletes body.

      As a result of the constant impact, sprints, jumps, rapidly changing direction and so on, a youth athletes body requires an instant batch of nutrients tailored to recovery, appropriate to their age.

      Junior athletes have special dietary requirements during this period of rapid growth, where critical structural foundations are set to carry an athlete into adulthood. There isn’t a product on the market for our youth athletes to assist them in their recovery currently, so, we decided to solve this problem responsibly.

      By identifying the unique needs of adolescent athletes and working backwards to design a food supplement range suitable, safe and relevant for todays academy athletes, we developed the perfect ‘all-in-one’ formula to kick-start your recovery process.

      3.1 Why did we design PROTEEN®?

      Junior athletes have special dietary requirements during this period of rapid growth, where critical structural foundations are set to carry an athlete into adulthood.

      Mass-market supplements are not made for youth athletes, and can contain ingredients that are untested and unsafe for U18's. We noted that the majority of supplements use marketing that is either unethical, or displaying unachievable results for youths in sport.

      The team behind YSN® wanted to develop a brand and product range that meets the values of our junior athletes and can add real value - without the use of overly muscular bound athletes, or provocative imagery.

      As there is no product range on the market to cater for youth athletes, we set out to assist them in their recovery nutrition by developing the perfect ‘all-in-one’ formula to kick-start a youth athletes recovery process and ensure selective eating habits, or restricted time schedules do not get in the way of recovery following intense exercise, supporting performance, development and recovery and confidence.

      YSN PROTEEN® is the world's first all-in-one shake for youth athletes, providing a convenient way to ensure correct nutrition is catered for. It is designed to provide a convenient source of protein and essential nutrients in the correct quantities to facilitate the additional nutritional demands of participating at a higher level whilst still a developing athlete. 

       

      3.2 How did we design PROTEEN®? 

      The physical foundations of top level athletes are laid during adolescence, and we believe that we need to do all we can to support and lead our youths to become an outstanding generation of athletes, and this begins with adopting correct nutrition.

      Working with relevant health organisations, YSN® devised a scientifically based Vitamin and Mineral complex to tend to the unique development needs of junior athletes, helping them to refuel like a pro. 

      Our unique and scientifically proven blend ensures additional protein and specific micronutrient requirements are met so that the risk of specific dietary deficiencies are reduced. This is in order to optimise performance and support normal development where participation at high level may alternatively negatively affect this.

      As ours is the only recovery shake for youths to market, we consulted a global team of leading Universities, Nutritionists and Athletes. Over the course of 2 years we worked in partnership to devise a bespoke formula that caters to the unique and advanced needs of a developing athlete.

      By supporting a young athlete's diet with a convenient source of essential nutrients, coupled with the correct nutritional guidance, strength conditioning and training regime, we aim to help eliminate obstacles to better health and nutrition and thereby help athletes push their limits and reach their full potential by guiding athletes to become more robust, better able to withstand the rigors of training and competition.

      It maintains our position that dietary education and recommendations for developing athletes should reinforce eating for long term health and to moderate eating patterns to reflect daily exercise demands, providing a regular spread of high quality carbohydrates and protein sources over the day but especially in the immediate period after training. 

      3.3. What are the Key benefits? 

      Protein - After intense exercise, our healthy dose of protein (21g to be exact) will provide a rapid delivery of amino acids to your muscles to help support growth and repair, optimising recovery time post training / match day. PROTEEN® can help repair, maintain and develop muscle tissue broken down in training to reduce injury susceptibility and encourage growth.

      Iron and Zinc – To help cognitive functions such as memory & concentration. Iron is also critical for junior female athletes and a common deficiency within this community. We want to eliminate any risk of Anaemia so PROTEEN® is designed to meet up to 84% of a young athlete's NRV (Nutrient Reference Value) per 50g serving.

      Carbohydrates -  Your body needs to replenish its glycogen stores immediately after exercise, so 21g per serving will help support replenishment of energy levels after training. Consuming carbohydrates with protein also supports absorption and uptake.

      B Vitamins - Offering many health benefits and contributing to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue (B2 & B12).

      Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorous and Vitamin D3 – AKA the ‘Bone Constructor’ - help build healthy bones during rapid periods of growth (preventing issues carried into later life). Our rockstar Vitamin D is sourced from cholecalciferol (pronounced: KOE-le-kal-SIF-er-ol) the most biologically active form of vitamin D found in humans and animals!

        3.4 Macros - Carbohydrates to Protein Ratio Split

        PROTEEN® is a premium, high protein, post exercise formula that assists with lean muscle maintenance and development following periods of intense exercise. It contains a precision 1:1 ratio of carbohydrates to protein, which helps to provide an excellent nutrient ratio for any youth athlete looking for replenishment after exercise. With very low sugar, no preservatives, and all natural flavourings, our recovery shake is second to none

         

        3.5 Carbs: Gluten Free Oatflower and More

        The carbs in PROTEEN® are from ultra-fine powdered oats. Oats have been shown to have a low glycaemic index (GI); GI refers to the speed after which we ingest a carb source to the resulting rise in blood sugar and, hence, energy levels.

        The oats in PROTEEN® mix easily and help sustain energy levels until the next meal. Many of the formulas used in sports nutrition or for weight reduction use maltodextrin as the main carb source. Maltodextrin is cheap and easy to mix, so there’s a valid reason for its use. However, although it’s a ‘complex’ carb, it actually has a high GI, so these formulas provide a surge of energy followed by a slump: far from ideal for busy athletes with intense training regimes. Maltodextrin is also a synthetic carb so provides nothing more than carbohydrates for energy.

        The gluten free oat powder in PROTEEN® has been milled so finely that it’s readily soluble, and there’s also not a huge price difference compared to maltodextrin. Plus, as oats are natural, they provide so much more than just carbohydrates: many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients too. Indeed, it could be said that the inclusion of gluten free oat powder is one of the main reasons why PROTEEN® could be considered superior to many sports nutrition products readily consumed today.

         

        3.5 Fats: Flaxseed, Chia Seed, MCT powder and More

        The fats in PROTEEN® provide a significant part of the total energy and are made up from flaxseeds to ensure that the essential fatty acids are included in optimum amounts. We’ve also included MCT powder (found in coconuts) for very good reasons: the fats in coconut are what are known as medium-chain triglycerides, or MCTs, and these are treated much like carbs, i.e. they provide an energy-rich, sustained fuel and are perfect for youth athletes with intense training schedules. But MCTs have another invaluable quality: they are not susceptible to oxidation and rancidity, meaning that they do not contribute to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. In short, MCTs from coconut are a healthy and efficient source of energy.

        Chia Seed Powder
        Chia seeds were cultivated long ago by the Aztecs and the Maya. The name “chia” comes from the word chian, meaning “oily” in the Aztec language of Nahuatl. What makes the oil in these tiny superseeds so special is the omega-3 essential fatty acids which may contribute to the maintenance of mental function. Healthy chia is also packed with fiber, calcium, iron and magnesium.

        Flaxseed

        The seeds of the Flax (or Linseed) plant have been used throughout history as a source of fibre and fatty acids, containing both soluble and insoluble fibre. It is free of added sugars, soy, dairy, fillers, flavours, and preservatives and is cold milled to ensure the powder isn't damaged during the production process.

        There are two completely essential fatty acids (EFAs) that humans require: linoleic acid (LA – an omega-6 fatty acid) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA – an omega-3).

        Using our triple blend of flaxseed, chia seed and MCT's, we’ve ensured  PROTEEN® contains sufficient amounts of both of these EFAs as well as other omega-3 and -6 fatty acids. Moreover, these natural seed powders provide antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals in a biochemical redox balance to help minimise free-radical production. Free radicals may be involved in the pathology of cancer, cardiovascular disease and ageing, so it’s desirable to keep their formation to a minimum, and this is the role of antioxidants.

         

         3.6 Why is PROTEEN® High in Protein

        Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. Protein is also needed for normal growth and development of bones in young athletes. With 21g protein per scoop, your optimum amount is formulated using a unique blend of healthy pea isolate proteins and fast acting premium grass fed whey isolates!

        While whey protein concentrate has a protein content of around 80%, the protein content of whey protein isolate is more like 90%. This is because whey protein isolate undergoes a process called Cross-Flow Micro-filtration. This separates the protein from fat, cholesterol and lactose meaning a purer protein as the end product.

        Whey protein isolate is believed to have less fat, cholesterol, lactose, carbohydrates and calories than most other proteins on the market, making it a common choice for those looking to maintain low levels of body fat but who still require the protein to help their muscles repair and recover.

        Whey protein isolate has a higher protein content and is lower in carbohydrates, lactose and fat. But it is typically more expensive due to the additional manufacturing process it undergoes. They are more rapidly absorbed than concentrates and create a more profound insulin response, making whey isolates popular post-workout choices. 

        Are Whey Isolate Proteins Lactose Free?

        Although whey protein concentrate is already considered low in lactose, whey protein isolate is considered even lower because of the additional manufacturing processes. Whey protein isolate is therefore often recommended for athletes who suffer from lactose intolerance.

        If you are lactose-intolerant and do choose to drink whey protein shakes, use only isolate powder and avoid whey concentrates or powders that are made from a mix of isolate and concentrate.

        As whey concentrate and isolates go through a process to remove most of the carbs, fat and lactose from "regular unprocessed whey" from whole milk. This process is called "ion exchange" or "filtering." Both result in an almost pure protein. A "concentrate" is 80% protein and an "isolate" is typically 90% protein.

        For YSN® customers, PROTEEN® contains a unique blend of Whey and Pea Isolate Proteins, meaning it is the safer choice if you are lactose intolerant (but it is always advised to check with a registered health official first). Our blend features a very high protein purity and gets the best of both animal and plant based products, without compromising taste, texture or quality.

         

        4. Vitamin and Minerals in PROTEEN®

        A bulk of the vitamins and minerals – also known as micronutrients – in PROTEEN® are from natural ingredients. All of the vitamins and minerals found in our blend are specifically chosen for a select reason and are contained in relative quantities to your age and stage of growth development. There are based on sub population food groups based from UK Dietary Reference Values.

         

        5. Amino Acid Profile of PROTEEN®

        Amino acids are the building blocks of protein within the body and are involved in the transport and storage of nutrients.

        The 20 amino acids that exist can be divided into essential and non-essential, which determines whether they can be produced within the body or not. The body can produce 11 amino acids, and therefore these are termed non-essential, whilst the remaining 9 (essential) must be consumed through the diet. All 20 amino acids are required for the human body to function healthily, with their roles including, but not limited to the production of:

        Every scoop of PROTEEN® contains a 4:1:1 ratio of Leucine to Isoleucine and Valine (Essential Amino Acids). These amino acids are considered essential as they are not produced by the body so must be obtained through your diet.

        All protein sources are not equal: some are classed as ‘complete proteins’ and some are not. A complete protein is one that contains sufficient quantities of all nine essential amino acids.

        Generally, proteins derived from animal foods (meats, fish, poultry, milk and eggs) are complete. Indeed, some proteins derived from plant foods (legumes, seeds, grains and vegetables) are often complete as well; examples include chickpeas, black beans, pumpkin seeds, cashews, cauliflower, quinoa, pistachios, turnip greens, black-eyed peas and soya. Many plant foods have insufficient amounts or one or more of the essential amino acids. Some are notably low, such as corn protein, which is low in lysine and isoleucine.

        The protein in PROTEEN® comes from three of the main ingredients: pea & whey isolate protein, oats and flaxseed. This ensures a good range of all amino acids and that there are sufficient amounts of the essential amino acids. Pea protein is low in cysteine and methionine but high in lysine. This is why we selected this source, ensuring everything was covered whilst keeping PROTEEN® low lactose. Plus there’s additional protein from the oats, which are reasonably high in all essential aminos, and the flaxseeds.

         

        6. Is PROTEEN® for Me?

        If you are a youth athlete over 4 years and above, participate in intense exercise and are looking for an ‘all-in-one’ recovery product, then PROTEEN® is the textbook choice.

        This product is also perfectly tailored to help you meet your individual daily macro and micronutrient requirements for the day, where selective eating or busy schedules/traveling may otherwise compromise intake.

         

        6.1 Amounts of PROTEEN® for different age groups

        As upper safe limits for vitamins and minerals in children haven’t been evaluated, we suggest children consume PROTEEN® up to around the recommended requirement levels for their age which is a maximum of 1 scoop per day after intense exercise or as a meal replacement on low activity days. The following will give you a guide as to how much PROTEEN® a child or adolescent can include as part of a varied diet whilst encouraging them to eat good wholesome foods every day. If your child has health issues, we recommend you consult your doctor or relevant clinical professional before allowing them to consume PROTEEN®.

        Children Under 4
        PROTEEN® is not suitable for babies or infants below or during weaning age. Parents of children under 4 years old should consult their doctor or relevant health care professional before allowing their child to consume PROTEEN®.

        4- to 6-Year-Olds
        Children of 4 to 6 years of age can include up to ¼ of a scoop (about 12.5g) PROTEEN® per day. This is around one quarter of their daily energy requirements and can be a great between-meal snack to ensure your child is getting a range of vitamins and minerals in.

        7- to 10-Year-Olds
        7- to 10-year-olds can enjoy ½ a scoop (about 25g) of PROTEEN® per day, which would help them meet their daily nutrition needs. PROTEEN® is ideal for fussy kids who won’t eat enough fruit and veg.

        11- to 14-Year-Olds
        Young adolescents can include around ¾ of 1 scoop (about 37.5g) of PROTEEN® a day. At this growth spurt age, energy requirements are high, especially in active athletic kids; PROTEEN® provides a good contribution of protein, energy and vitamins for this age group.

        15+ -Year-Olds
        Older adolescents have, in most cases, nutritional requirements greater than those of adults due to the fact that they’re growing, they’re often as physically active as professional athletes and have to balance this against studying at school or college. This age group can enjoy 1 full scoop of PROTEEN® (50g) freely as part of a balanced, varied diet after intense sport or on low activity days to support recovery.

         

        6.2 When Should I Consume PROTEEN®?

        To reap the benefits of this product, our expert team of nutritionists recommend consuming this product immediately post-exercise with water or milk.

        Top tip: PROTEEN® can be easily consumed whilst your coach is doing their post-match team talk or as you’re leaving the gym changing rooms for instance, just remember to pay attention! 

         

        6.3 Suggested Use

        Add 1 level scoop (50g) to 500ml of water or milk in a YSN® Shaker and consume within 30 minutes post-session.

        Alternatively, consume in the mornings with smoothies, porridges, Greek yoghurts, pancakes or on its own.

        Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This product is intended to be used alongside an active lifestyle and a balanced diet. Suitable for vegetarians.
