NUTRI-TEEN Shakes:

Is NUTRI-TEEN a protein shake?

NUTRI-TEEN is a recovery shake, not a protein shake. NUTRI-TEEN has an higher, but equal protein to carbohydrate content ratio to most other macro/micro nutrients. NUTRI-TEEN is designed to comprise a complete recovery nutrition profile, specially formulated for active youths who may have different nutritional needs to adults, or less-active kids.

The objective of NUTRI-TEEN is to provide a unique blend of scientifically selected essential ingredients to ensure kids are able to get the right balance of what their body needs following high levels of exertion, for times when good quality whole food sources aren’t available.

When is the best time for my child to drink their NUTRI-TEEN shake?

YSN developed NUTRI-TEEN Powder to be taken immediately after play, as research shows this is a crucial time for the body to recover, grow and rebuild.

You may also use NUTRI-TEEN Powder as a meal replacement on low activity days, if your kids are struggling to meet their daily nutrient needs.

How often can my child use NUTRI-TEEN?

We designed NUTRI-TEEN Powder to be used once daily following play, whenever good quality whole food sources aren't available.

We do understand however that kids and teens participating in certain sports struggle for time and train two or three times daily, and find it difficult to fit food in.

If this is the case, you may half your usual serving size, and have two shakes. So, for example, if you have training in the morning, and again on an evening, you can use 1/2 of your normal serving size following each session twice (half a scoop after morning training, and half a scoop on the evening as a separate shake).

Remember to stay within your daily serving size recommendations so that you're not using too much or too little.

What’s best to mix NUTRI-TEEN Powder with?

NUTRI-TEEN® is a versatile product and everyone’s tastes and preferences are unique, it can take a little experimenting to find what is just right for you. Here are some examples that you can use to mix your NUTRI-TEEN Powder with:

Milk (experiment with different types; coconut, almond, soy etc.), Cold Water, Fruit Juices, Blended Greens, Smoothies.

Top tip: Add ice for a super chilled shake. Milk and ice are our customers’ most popular combo, but don’t shy away from playing around with different NUTRI-TEEN® concoctions. Feeling creative? You can try cooking with NUTRI-TEEN® - check out our user generated recipes here

What age groups can use NUTRI-TEEN Powder?

NUTRI-TEEN Powder was specifically formulated to aid the recovery of growing athletes with a targeted nutritional profile, aimed at combating the common nutritional deficiencies in young athletes. If your athlete isn’t able to consume a meal post training - for example many parents face time and practicality issues while athletes may not be hungry after training or may not like the taste of certain foods - for these situations NUTRI-TEEN may be an ideal tool to help support recovery.

The following will give you a guide as to how much NUTRI-TEEN Powder a youth athlete may include as part of a varied diet, whilst encouraging them to eat good wholesome foods every day. If your youth athlete has health issues, we recommend you consult your doctor or relevant clinical professional before allowing them to consume NUTRI-TEEN. Please note the below values are present as guidelines only, and that is important that youth athletes do not exceed the stated daily recommended amounts:

Children Under 4

NUTRI-TEEN® is not suitable for babies or infants below or during weaning age. Parents of children under 4 years old should consult their doctor or relevant health care professional before allowing their child to consume NUTRI-TEEN®.

4- to 6-Year-Olds

We always advocate a food first approach for younger participants. The aim here being to set nutritional foundations for life, but we understand selective eating can sometime be an issue. If absolutely necessary, Children of 4 to 6 years of age may include up to ¼ of a scoop (about 12.5g) NUTRI-TEEN® per day. This is around one quarter of their daily nutrient requirements and can be a great way to ensure your child is getting a range of vitamins and minerals in. Always consult a qualified medical practitioner first if you are unsure about introducing NUTRI-TEEN® into their diet.

7- to 10-Year-Olds
7- to 10-year-olds can enjoy ½ a scoop (about 25g) of NUTRI-TEEN® per day, which would help them meet their daily nutrition needs to counter selective eating habits. NUTRI-TEEN® is ideal for fussy kids who won’t eat enough fruit and veg to support high levels of participation in sport. Again, athletes within this age group should be encouraged to meet their daily recommended intake via whole foods first.

11- to 13-Year-Olds
Young adolescents can include around ¾ of 1 scoop (about 37.5g) of NUTRI-TEEN® a day. At this growth spurt age, energy requirements are high, especially in active athletic kids; NUTRI-TEEN® provides a good contribution of protein, energy and vitamins for this age group.

13- to 18+-Year-Olds
Older adolescents have, in most cases, nutritional requirements greater than those of adults due to the fact that they’re growing, they’re often as physically active as professional athletes and have to balance this against studying at school or college. This age group can enjoy 1 full scoop of NUTRI-TEEN® (50g) freely as part of a balanced, varied diet after intense sport or on low activity days.

Do NUTRI-TEEN Shakes support weight loss?

NUTRI-TEEN Shakes are a food powder with added nutrients to support normal growth, immunity, general health and wellbeing for active children and active children.

Although not designed as a weight loss tool, NUTRI-TEEN Shakes are calorie controlled shakes that can double up as a meal replacements that may support weight loss, but that is not the main intention of the range.

If anything, they exist to help active children meet their daily nutritional intake to support heightened activity levels or to counteract selective / fussy eating which can leave them undernourished.

As a rule, we don't like to overemphasize the impact of shakes on body composition for active children, as the large contributing factors are their overall diet and lifestyle.

Will NUTRI-TEEN Powder work for my child?

NUTRI-TEEN Powder has been designed to meet a youth athletes’ requirements for key major nutrients.

Youth athletes are enjoying using NUTRI-TEEN Powder to support recovery after intense exercise or participation in sport. They may also use it as an alternative for some of their meals if access to whole foods is limited due to selective eating habits, or lack of time.

Typical times that NUTRI-TEEN Powder is used as a meal replacement is on the way to school after morning training, or before bed following a late evening session where they don’t wish to go to bed on a full stomach, or parents haven’t the time to cook a full meal.

What if my child doesn't like the taste?

Following extensive focus groups with youth athletes during product development, YSN designed NUTRI-TEEN Powder with their unique taste buds in mind, and we made sure to choose the options that were voted in.

A large proportion of our customers love all three flavours, but always have one favourite of the three, Milk Chocolate being the most popular by far.

Since NUTRI-TEEN Powder is such a versatile product and everyone’s tastes and preferences are so unique, it can take a little experimenting to find what is just right for you. Here are some tips that you can use to help flavour your NUTRI-TEEN Shake if you’re interested in giving it another try!

1.     Make sure that you are adding liquid before powder. That will help avoid lumps and get a better consistency. Also, the quicker you shake it up, the better.

2.     Use ice for a super chilled shake. Milk and ice is our most popular combo.

3.     If you like a thinner consistency, add more liquid, but also don’t let your NUTRI-TEEN Shake sit for too long as it will thicken over time.

4.     If the unique NUTRI-TEEN Powder texture is difficult for you, blending it might seem like a pain, but it is the best way to get a smooth texture. It’s also a good step to help you get used to the texture so that you can eventually just shake and go.

5.     Don’t shy away from playing around with different NUTRI-TEEN Powder concoctions. Try things like almond milk (unsweetened, chocolate, coconut milk blend, etc.), adding powdered peanut butter (such as chocolate peanut butter), and once you’re feeling really brave, you can try things like blended fruit or greens which are all popular options!

Hope this helps! If it's a flat no from your child, then simply reach out to us anytime for more assistance.

Will using NUTRI-TEEN Shakes make my child muscly?

The objective of NUTRI-TEEN Powder is somewhat different from popular mass market supplements. As a food powder, NUTRI-TEEN® is optimised to support health and normal development of active youths.

The protein contained in NUTRI-TEEN Powder is there to support working, tired muscles’ recovery following intense exercise. Even though a strong muscular system is important for sport, the objective isn’t purely centred on muscle building; rather in conjunction with other nutrients, NUTRI-TEEN Powder is there to support the bodies normal recovery process through addressing common nutritional deficiencies within an active youths’ diet.

Is NUTRI-TEEN Powder lactose and dairy free?

NUTRI-TEEN Powder is formulated using a unique blend of healthy pea isolate proteins and fast acting premium whey isolates. While whey protein concentrate has a protein content of around 80%, the protein content of whey protein isolate is more like 90%. This is because whey protein isolate undergoes a process called Cross-Flow Micro-filtration. This separates the protein from fat, cholesterol and lactose meaning a purer protein as the end product.

Whey protein isolate is believed to have less fat, cholesterol, lactose, carbohydrates and calories than most other proteins on the market, making it a common choice for those looking to maintain low levels of body fat but who still require the protein to help their muscles repair and recover.

Whey protein isolate has a higher protein content and is lower in carbohydrates, lactose and fat. But it is typically more expensive due to the additional manufacturing process it undergoes. They are more rapidly absorbed than concentrates and create a more profound insulin response, making whey isolates popular post-workout choices.

Are Whey Isolate Proteins Lactose Free?

Although whey protein concentrate is already considered low in lactose, whey protein isolate is considered even lower because of the additional manufacturing processes. Whey protein isolate is therefore often recommended for athletes who suffer from lactose intolerance. If you are lactose-intolerant and do choose to drink whey protein shakes, use only isolate powder and avoid whey concentrates or powders that are made from a mix of isolate and concentrate.

As whey concentrate and isolates go through a process to remove most of the carbs, fat and lactose from "regular unprocessed whey" from whole milk. This process is called "ion exchange" or "filtering." Both result in an almost pure protein. A "concentrate" is 80% protein and an "isolate" is typically 90% protein.

NUTRI-TEEN Powder contains a unique blend of Whey and Pea Isolate Proteins, meaning it may be a better choice if you are lactose intolerant (but it is always advised to check with a registered health official first). Our blend features a very high protein purity and gets the best of both animal and plant-based products, without compromising taste, texture or quality.

Is NUTRI-TEEN Powder suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

NUTRI-TEEN Powder is vegetarian, but not vegan due to a small contribution of whey isolate protein

Is NUTRI-TEEN Powder gluten free?

Yes, it is.

Does NUTRI-TEEN Powder contain nuts?

No, no nuts to be found here!

Where is NUTRI-TEEN Powder manufactured?

NUTRI-TEEN Powder is manufactured in the UK, with every batch attaining an approval certificate from LGC Informed Sport.

Are there any known side effects from drinking NUTRI-TEEN Powder?

We always advise consulting a health care professional if you’re unsure, however we have had no reports from customers of any side effects to date.

Will NUTRI-TEEN Powder make my athlete gain or lose weight?

NUTRI-TEEN Powder is designed to compliment a well-balanced diet, to help active youths meet normal growth and development requirements. It is not made to support or promote weight gain or loss.

Is NUTRI-TEEN Powder 100% drug free? And is it safe? Does it contain steroids?

The use of dietary supplements by athletes has been a concern because in many countries the manufacturing and labelling of supplements may not follow strict rules, which may lead to a supplement containing an undeclared substance that is prohibited under anti-doping regulations.

Big muscles or the 'steroid' look which has most been associated with supplements is purely down to the unscrupulous marketing of many mass-market supplement firms. Contrary to popular opinion, food supplements are just food in powdered form for convenience. They are not a means to get big, faster, stronger, quicker and will only aid athletes to conveniently meet daily dietary nutrient intake with the correct combination of diet, training, rest and sleep for recovery.

As a food powder, not a supplement, NUTRI-TEEN Shakes ensure that selective eating habits, time or undernourishment does not get in the way of recovery, health and normal development for youths in sport requiring additional nutrients to support participation. Essentially, NUTRI-TEEN Powder is food in powdered form, made this way for practicality and convenience as an aid.  YSN are UK based, our label is regulated and approved, our production site is Informed Sport vetted as are our raw materials and processes. Each and every batch is tested by Informed Sport. This even includes blind testing. We operate a fully transparent business with the health and wellbeing of our customers being our highest concern.

YSN go to every length possible to ensure 100% drug free assurance, more so than any other food product globally as we meet the gold standard. There's some more reading on the thorough checks that the informed sport process and accreditation offers for consumers here  https://www.informed-sport.com/about

Why is NUTRI-TEEN Powder expensive?

NUTRI-TEEN Powder is a low margin product, mainly due to the cost of high-quality ingredients we use. You also need to factor in our delivery costs and Informed Sport testing (to make sure its safe and healthy for athletes to use).

Our ambition is to ensure that the cost of NUTRI-TEEN Powder, and our whole range is offset by the time and cost savings for parents compared to food - you’d have to shop around and also factor in costs of ingredients, petrol, parking, electricity, gas etc to prepare a similar 10 or 20 quality nutritional meals.

It also saves a lot of cupboard space :)

Will too much protein damage my kids liver?

As a food-first company, the YSN range is there to ensure that any nutritional needs that can’t be catered for from a regular healthy diet, can be provided in both a controlled, convenient and efficient manner.

Our range is simply food in powdered format. They don't do anything else that the normal diet wont, they simply exist as a convenience aid.

Any nutrient taken in excess by any age group (adults included) has potential to become harmful, that’s why there’s serving guides and a measuring scoop :)

Should active children use NUTRI-TEEN?

Active youths should always endeavour to obtain their daily nutritional requirements via whole foods. However, there are common barriers that may prevent many youth athletes from meeting this standard consistently.

There were no nutritional supplements specifically tailored to youth athletes until YSN developed NUTRI-TEEN Powder. Mass-market alternatives are developed for adults.

Youths in sport may suffer from nutritional deficiencies, due to a number of factors;

- Selective eating habits

- Lack of time or knowledge

- Expensive whole food options

- Limited access to quality nutrition when it's needed

- Youth athletes are going through key periods of physical development, thus meeting their nutritional requirements is vitally important.

Given the frequency and intensity of training loads, we set a mission to eradicate youth undernourishment by providing the first functional food powder globally tailored for active kids, approved by Informed Sport.

Is processed food bad?

Food processing combines raw food ingredients either through physical mechanisms or through the inclusion of additives to produce food products that can be easily prepared and served by parents.

However, the extent as to which foods can be processed can vary hugely and, unless you’re eating food in its 100% natural form, you are consuming a processed food of some form.

The difficulty from a busy parents perspective is buying, mixing and cooking (processing) whole foods to meet a specific nutritional profile 100% of the time. Our main value proposition is convenience.

In our opinion, this is where our food powders can offer high utility as an alternative to eating junk/fast for or skipping meals which is typically the go-to for busy days.
